Fireproof Safes

Need a fireproof safe to protect your valuables against the elements? Fireproof safes are designed to protect items from high temperature environments and fires alike—making them ideal in both home and business environments.

Whether you need to store important documents or fire arms, a fireproof safe can give you the level of protection you need and the peace of mind you deserve. So what are you waiting for? Contact us today or visit one of our lock shops for fireproof safes in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia.

How Fireproof Safes Work

Though the way a fireproof safe operates generally differs depending on the brand and style, they are typically engineered to resist heat and fire in the following ways:

  • The interior cavity is built with a fire-resistant composite containing a hydrate that releases water vapor when it comes in contact with heat
  • Some of the vapor is then directed to the interior of the safe in order to regulate internal temperatures and create a pressure seal
  • Vents or holes are placed in strategic parts of the safe, such as the front of the door, to control pressure and humidity levels
  • The inside edges of the door will swell when there’s excess heat, sealing the safe shut

However, each type of safe is designed to protect a different type of item—so make sure to let us know what you’ll be storing so we can help you make the best decision to meet your needs. Film, for example, typically starts to degrade at around 150 degrees and must be protected from electro-magnetic interference as well. Paper products, on the other hand, don’t start to degrade until around 350 degrees.

It’s also important to note that fireproof doesn’t necessarily mean water proof—meaning outside sprinklers that are activated during a fire can still cause damage. However, there are some brands that are resistant to both, which may be best for a business environment with an indoor sprinkler system in place.

Need a Fireproof Safe in Maryland, Washington, D.C. or Virginia?

Fireproof safes are ideal for businesses and homes trying to protect items like paper documents or passports, but they can also keep other types of valuables safe, depending on which type you choose. Just be sure to check the safe’s rating to determine what type of material it will protect and how long it can withstand excess heat.

Our experienced locksmiths can help you further understand the rating system and choose the best safe to meet your needs, depending on what type of products you need to protect and any special requirements you may have, such as water resistance. So if you’re ready to start protecting your valuables with a fireproof safe in Maryland, Washington, D.C., or Virginia, call us to schedule a consultation today.
